Chinese Five Spice is a traditional blend of five spices–star anise, cloves, fennel, cinnamon, and Szechuan pepper–used throughout China and Vietnam to season pork, vegetable, and poultry dishes.
The combination of fennel seeds and star anise gives the blend its anise flavor, which goes well with fatty foods, e.g., pork, duck or game. To create this intensely flavorful blend, we begin with whole spices and grind them in small batches.
Use it in marinades and rubs for chicken, beef, lamb, or pork; combine it with INDIA TREE Fleur de Sel and INDIA TREE Caster Sugar to create a dry dip for roasted chicken or prawns; add it to a stir fry; blend it with soy sauce and INDIA TREE Light Muscovado Sugar to create a simple glaze for fish; use it to season fried rice and noodle dishes.
